• Budgets 2021. We can ask for more spending, more taxes and zero cuts

  • Profile.Nacho Álvarez, the last pawn of Pablo Iglesias to save the influence of Podemos

The meeting of Pedro Sánchez and Pablo Casado in La Moncloa has ended with a bittersweet balance: the president and the Government and the head of the opposition have confirmed their distance on major issues that require consensus, but have made progress in some health reforms and but they have made progress in some health, social and even economic reforms.

"Today I have come with an outstretched hand to reach agreements on health, economic, and legal, legal and educational matters," Casado began saying after the meeting with the Prime Minister, which lasted one hour and 50 minutes. .

"I have come to lean my shoulder, and for that you have to do it without looking over your shoulder, and you have to look where the other shoulder rests": in an imputed party that calls for the abdication of the King as United We Can and "in Bildu's whitening ", the head of the opposition has stopped.

That is why there has been no rapprochement between the two for the renewal of State institutions such as the General Council of the Judiciary, because "the vice president of the Government [Pablo Iglesias] seeks a change of regime."

In addition, Casado has transmitted to Sánchez his outright refusal to support the General State Budget, because he does not know if it is "a decoy", since there is not even a ceiling on spending.

"I do not know a single line of what they intend to do in those Budgets."

"This cannot be a swallow: we have to know what the Budgets have and with whom; in addition, the PP is the opposition and there is an alternative sum in which neither Bildu, nor CUP, nor Junts per Catalunya nor ERC are necessary" , Casado explained.

In addition, the PP does not support the tax increases or the spending measures requested by Podemos.

Casado has proposed a dozen agreements and has seen possibilities of reaching agreements in some of them.

For example, in the modification of the legal framework so that the autonomies have more instruments to combat the pandemic with mobility limitations that do not imply states of alarm.

The president of the PP has proposed "the creation of a National Agency for the Economic Recovery of Spain", and believes that there are possibilities that it will come to fruition.

This body would control the distribution of European aid, and it could be directed by a former governor of the Bank of Spain or a former community commissioner without political affiliation.

That agency would prioritize and choose investments with European funds that the European Commission has granted to Spain (around 140,000 million) and avoid "patronage" and "Peronism."

The third point in which Casado sees scope for the agreement is the State pact for health.

"We have no excuse for not sitting down and shutting ourselves up and bequeathing to future generations a pact that lasts over time", in the manner of the Toledo Pact for pensions.

In their meeting, the two leaders discussed the pandemic situation, with the "second wave" of coronavirus infections, the worsening economy, the situation of the European Union and social measures, with special emphasis on the minimum vital income.

"The Government is leaving many people behind," Casado stressed.

In these areas, the leader of the PP has transferred to Sánchez that he will accept some of his proposals.

For example, a reinforcement of the Spanish civil service so that the minimum vital income is better managed.

Also in the improvements on digitization or pensions.

Among the points in which Sánchez and Casado have collided, the plan of the 'popular' for education, the proposal of a new legal framework against squatting (recovering the crime of usurpation of housing) or the fight against immigration labor.

Added to them, as always, Casado's demand to lower taxes and reduce bureaucracy.
