Last night, in the port of the Sicilian capital, 181 migrants who arrived by bus from Porto Empedocle, where they had been transferred from Lampedusa, and the staff of the Italian Red Cross were boarded on the Allegra quarantine ship.
The Allegra is at anchor in Palermo awaiting the arrival of the Sea Watch for the transshipment of the 313 migrants, as already happened in May with the ships Alan Kurdi and Aita Mari, and then it is expected to set sail for Lampedusa.
Still in Sicily, in Lampedusa the climate is "serene" in the hotspot, but there are "serious problems of sanitation and promiscuity" as well as "stress from overcrowding".
This was revealed by the regional task force on its third inspection of the reception facilities for migrants in Sicily, after the visits to Pozzallo and Ragusa.
The special "commission" was formed by decree of the regional health councilor Ruggero Razza - coordinated by Cristoforo Pomara and made up of 14 people, including university professors and experienced professionals in the safety and health sector.
On the difficult issue of overcrowding in the hotspot of Lampedusa that the regional leaders want to evacuate, Governor Nello Musumeci intervened, who will soon meet Prime Minister Conte in Rome together with the mayor of Lampedusa Totò Martello: "Now what do we do? - said Musumeci - It is said that it is virtual reality? Unfortunately it is the demonstration of what we have been saying for some time: human rights must be practiced, not preached. Otherwise it is just rhetoric. I am and feel responsible for the health safety of the territory ",
The task force was supported in the visit by the units of the regional department of Civil Protection, led by the general manager Salvo Cocina.
"The climate inside the reception center is quite serene - said Cocina - but clearly there is an overcrowding caused by the thousand guests. Certainly the conditions in Pozzallo were better. The stress of overcrowding is evident, with all the consequences that occur. they can easily imagine ".
"We have detected urgencies and emergencies that we will immediately transform into a report to be sent to the Department of Health for assessments. From a technical point of view - said Professor Pomara - we have put in place the medico-legal methodology. the inspection survey to verify the conditions of the places, the state of things and, obviously, the multidisciplinary team at our disposal will provide an assessment of the most immediate impacts, placing the emphasis on the urgencies and health emergencies that concern the host population ".
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry has announced that it will send two other large-capacity ships off the coast of Sicily for the quarantine of arriving migrants.
