British police said on Monday they had released two men, previously arrested for terrorism.

They had been arrested on their arrival in London aboard a Ryanair plane, escorted by fighter jets.

After an alert signaling the presence of a "suspicious object in the toilet" of the aircraft, the aircraft was escorted to landing.

It was there that the two men were arrested by anti-terrorism police on Sunday evening.

The object not judged as disturbing

"After being examined by specialized investigators, the object was not considered worrying," police said in a statement.

“The police spoke to the two men and neither is considered to have committed an offense.

"

According to a spokesperson for the low-cost airline Ryanair, the crew had been warned of "a potential threat to safety on board".

The Royal Air Force (RAF), the British air force, said two Typhoon fighter jets had been mobilized "to intercept a civilian plane", which was "escorted to safety to Stansted".
