  • The city adopted the Canopy plan during the municipal council of August 31.

  • A greening of the city voted unanimously, but which questions opposition officials who find the budget "too low" to be effective.

  • In the meantime, the revegetation of the city has started to be put in place on an ephemeral basis since July to “bring greenery and shade to the city”.

  • A summer proposal that does not necessarily meet with unanimity among the Strasbourg residents met by

The ephemeral plant installations this summer, just like the Canopée plan, are the stars of this Strasbourg return: they challenge the inhabitants, and make the elected opposition react.

The rows of trees placed in pots lined up here and there in some very mineral squares in the city have been blooming since July.

A provisional initiative - the cost of which still amounts to 130,000 euros for the community - but already "considered positive" by the people of Strasbourg, according to Suzanne Brolly, deputy mayor in charge of the "resilient city" during the city council on Monday .

"It's pretty, but it didn't cast a shadow"

seem more measured… Julie and her friends, high school girls sitting on the ground, just a few meters from the trees in question, are amused by our request: “Oh yes?

We didn't even see them, yet I spent the summer in Strasbourg.

Ditto for the other young girls.

A little further on, Nadia, 32, regrets above all the “futility” of ephemeral vegetation.

“It's pretty, even if it's too straight, but it didn't shade, the place is still so hot and it won't fight against the heat islands.

I have the impression that we are being made fun of.

More radical, Anne, a 53-year-old cyclist, answers us that if she "wanted greenery, she would go and live in the countryside", and continues: "it's pretty but it's all demagoguery.

This will not slow down global warming ”.

"No shade", "not striking", "the money would have been better spent elsewhere, especially for students" there are many reservations.

Other Strasbourg residents tell us that "it's already a start", "an awareness even if it smacks of amateurism.

"" It should be everywhere, it's pleasant, it calms and it sends a message "," It's great "," it was about time, we must give priority to greenery over minerals in all urban projects ".

The opposition wonders

This summer device is part of a vast environmental approach, dear to the new municipal team: the Canopée plan.

But, if it was adopted unanimously by the city council on Monday, it also made the opposition elected officials react, who particularly regretted a budget limited to 300,000 euros per year, too low according to them to really change things.

Gondola head of this plan: the planting of 10,000 trees in ten years.

But also a “general” revegetation which will be implemented “in an equitable manner throughout the Strasbourg territory.

And not only in the city center, ”promises the mayor.

Objective by 2050?

Reach 30% of urban space covered by trees, compared to 26% currently.

And to see the first manifestations of the Canopy plan, it will take a little more patience, because the plantings are generally done in November.
