"We continue to closely monitor developments in Belarus, and we support international efforts to provide an independent assessment of election violations, human rights violations and the use of harsh measures by the authorities," TASS quoted her as saying. 

She also stated that Russia "must respect the sovereignty of Belarus" and "the right of the country's citizens to freely and honestly choose their own leaders."

Earlier, the European Union, the United States, Great Britain and Switzerland issued a joint statement on Belarus, in which they called on Minsk "to comply with international obligations and stop violence and threats to use military force against the people."

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is worried about signs of external interference in the affairs of Belarus. He called it unacceptable and called for the Belarusians to be able to resolve their problems themselves.
