The photo was taken in Berlin, but it dates from 2003, as AFP noted.

It was taken by Dr Motte, pseudonym of a Berlin DJ, during the Love Parade.

Dr Motte is at the origin of this annual event, established in 1989. He unveiled the photo on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the event.

The rally on Saturday brought together 38,000 people, authorities said.

Much of it remained calm, but a group of protesters later broke through barriers in the evening in an attempt to enter the grounds of the Reichstag, the German parliament.

Angela Merkel on Monday denounced "shameful images" while the President of the Republic, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, noted that "the extreme right-wing violence during the demonstration on Saturday in Berlin had, rightly, frightened and indignant many people ".
