It is in an interview with the new Zealand radio channel Magic Talk that Nabarro praises parts of Sweden's approach to the pandemic. The WHO expert gets the question of whether more and more countries will follow in Sweden's footsteps with more recommendations, rather than strict bans.

- I believe that the approach that all countries should focus on is to get the public to limit the spread of the virus through its behavior. The goal for the future should be that, like Sweden and several other countries, to continue without major "lockdowns", says Nabarro, one of the WHO's seven special covid-19 experts.

"There must be trust"

However, he emphasizes that Sweden has so far failed to protect the elderly. But the important thing now is to look ahead, according to Nabarro, who points out that the trust between the population and authorities in Sweden is something that other countries should follow.

- When there is trust between the public and the government, then you get good results. This does not mean that for that matter there should be no political debate, what I am saying is that there must be trust. In the end, it is by all of us acting responsibly that we will get out of this.

Want to avoid long period of restrictions

However, temporarily restricting travel or otherwise imposing more intrusive restrictions may be necessary, according to Nabarro. Above all, to prevent the intensity of the spread of infection from increasing in an uncontrolled manner.

- But it should definitely not be about a long period, several months or so. I really hope this can be avoided.
