30 August 2020The sirocco and high temperatures fuel the flames in half of Sicily. In addition to the fire in progress in Altofonte, in the Palermo area, tonight the flames also affected the area of Monte Monaco in San Vito Lo Capo, in the Trapani area:

The flames, which started from Macari, passed the mountain and reached the Tonnara di San Vito Lo Capo, on the coast, and then extended to the nearby Zingaro nature reserve, which had already been destroyed by flames in 2012. The only area that was saved, say the men committed to facing the fire, is the first cove of the reserve, the "Tonnarella del Luzzo".

Lo Zingaro is one of the most popular naturalistic places in Sicily and was the first nature reserve established on the island forty years ago. The flames have also reached the Visitor Center of the Zingaro, where the Canadair are carrying out water jumps to limit the damage. It is not yet known whether the fire affected the Calampiso residence, where there are no people: the structure, in fact, this year was closed.
