The accident happened on Saturday afternoon. A family of four hikers, originally from Versailles, was swept away by a major rock slide as they headed towards the Arves refuge, in the town of Valloire in Savoie. Boulders fell from 2,200 meters onto a plateau where the group was. The emergency services were alerted around 5 p.m., specifies Le Dauphiné Libéré .

They are a couple and their two small children, including a 15-year-old teenager, who had his leg crushed. Once cleared by the emergency services, he was evacuated by helicopter to the Grenoble hospital where he should undergo an amputation, reports France Bleu. The grandfather was shot in the ribs and the little girl in the back. They were transported to the CHU of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.

The weather conditions were particularly bad on Saturday in the mountains. Which made the rescue operation very delicate.
