• Aragon: They order the slaughter of 92,700 minks from a farm after an outbreak of Covid-19

The head of the Court of Instruction No. 2 of Teruel has admitted to processing a complaint for an alleged crime of animal abuse resulting in death filed against the owner of the farm with 92,000 minks, in the municipality of La Puebla de Valverde, which were euthanized last July after being affected by a coronavirus outbreak .

The complaint was filed earlier this month by the president and legal representative of the Association for the Defense of Victims of Injustices (Apadevi), the lawyer María Girona, who holds the owners of the exploitation responsible for causing the situation by omitting the necessary measures to prevent the transmission of the virus to animals by your employees.

In her letter, to which Efe has had access, the lawyer refers to the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of the Government of Aragon to order the slaughter of the animals, after verifying that there was a community transmission between them and not being able to determine neither the origin of the outbreak nor whether it was capable of being transmitted to humans.

However, the lawyer states in her letter that last May, seven of the 14 workers of the aforementioned farm tested positive for coronavirus, thus ruling out that the transmitters of the contagion would have been minks. In the lawyer's opinion, it is "evident" that, after detecting the virus among the workers, the person responsible for the exploitation did not adopt the necessary measures so that the contagion did not spread massively to the animals and thus causing their sacrifice.

THE PROCESS

In accordance with the requests made in the complaint, which has been supported by the Teruel Prosecutor's Office, the instructor orders in his order to initiate investigation procedures and request the Territorial Delegation of the Aragon Government in the Teruel province to report on the process that resulted in the sacrifice of mink.

It also asks the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard to identify the legal representative or administrator of the exploitation to take a statement as investigated in relation to these events.

The magistrate imposes on the association the payment of a guarantee of 600 euros as a previous step to the processing of the complaint, an amount that the association and the Prosecutor's Office itself requested that it had a "symbolic" character as it lacked the economic resources to deal with your payment. Apadevi does not rule out requesting financial support from potential donors to face the legal costs generated throughout the investigation of the case.

The minks were finally slaughtered by order of the Aragonese Government under the supervision of the Sociedad Aragonesa de Gestión Agroambiental (SARGA), in an operation the cost of which the association claims to fall on the company to succeed in its complaint.
