“The United States deeply appreciates the enduring contribution of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to making the US-Japanese relationship the strongest in its history,” Pompeo was quoted by the US State Department website as saying.
He noted that Abe was promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The secretary of state also wished the Japanese politician a speedy and complete recovery.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that he was upset by Shinzo Abe's departure from the post of Prime Minister of Japan.
