The oil spill occurred from the Japanese cargo ship MV Wakashio, which ran aground on a coral reef in the Indian Ocean on July 25 and began leaking its cargo two weeks later. Since then, several dead dolphins have been washed up on Mauritius' beaches.

Environmental activists demand a proper investigation to find out if they died as a result of the oil leak.

- We do not trust the government and the vague information they fed us regarding the handling of the oil spill, says the 33-year-old protester and environmental researcher Fabiola Monty.

The government has promised that autopsies will be performed on all dead dolphins and has formed a commission to investigate the leak. Veterinarians who have so far only had time to examine two dolphins state that they carry traces of injuries but that no oil has been found in their bodies, according to preliminary results.
