In Senegal, discussions by the political committee for national dialogue have resumed, after having suspended its work for five months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A progress report was sent to Macky Sall. The Senegalese president had set up this national dialogue, which brings together more than a hundred participants, political and from civil society, after his re-election in 2019. Several questions must be resolved before the upcoming local elections are held.

In Senegal, the members of the political commission for the national dialogue are relieved. Discussions have finally resumed and the report which takes stock of the progress has been deposited on the office of the President of the Republic, Macky Sall.

Since mid-March, their work has been at a standstill as the deadline for local elections approaches, already delayed to March 2021. This report lists the issues that were the subject of consensus, as well as those that must be discussed again or which have not yet been discussed.

Election of mayors by direct universal suffrage

Among the consensuses found, the opposition welcomes the audit of the electoral register by independent experts, the evaluation of the electoral process as well as the election of mayors by direct universal suffrage. Recently, members also agreed to remove sponsorship for local elections.

On the other hand, no compromise was found on the question of the cumulative status of head of state and party leader. They still have to discuss several points, including the question of the body that will be in charge of organizing the elections. President Macky Sall pledged that all points of consensus be applied.
