President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday decided to suspend the hunting of glue, a controversial method, for blackbirds and thrushes this year in France. "It was so offbeat, odious and cruel that we are happy that it is becoming normal," responded the general manager of the League for the protection of birds on Europe 1.

"We would be wrong to shun our pleasure, it is true that it is a very nice announcement." Guest of Europe 1 Thursday evening, the director general of the League for the protection of birds (LPO) Yves Vérilhac welcomed the decision of Emmanuel Macron to suspend the hunting of thrush and blackbird glue for this year. The Elysee had made this announcement earlier today, while the compliance of this controversial hunting method, still authorized in the south-east of France and which consists of trapping birds with glue, must soon be clarified by the Court of Justice of the European Union.

"Do not sulk our pleasure"

"Let us not sulk our pleasure. It is a great victory for the LPO which, moreover, would not have succeeded without the support of the French population," added Yves Vérilhac. "After that, it was so offbeat, odious and cruel that we are happy that it becomes normal."

At the end of 2019, the Council of State had referred the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union to clarify whether the "Birds" directive allows the capture of certain species of wild birds with glue, without having obtained answer for now.

"All the birds get caught and the damage is irreversible"

"We have shown that it is not selective, that is to say that all birds get caught and that the damage is irreversible. There is physical damage first, because major feathers stick together. and the bird is condemned, then chemical because the birds are lifted off using F4 gasoline type thinners ", concluded Yves Vérilhac.
