The Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate, IVO, criticizes both Vimmerby municipality, which is responsible for the nursing home where the man lived and the doctor who assessed the man's health condition, in the Kalmar County Region.

Doctor visits were delayed

According to the report, the man had problems with a severe cough for several weeks without being allowed to see a doctor.

The relatives must have told the care staff that they wanted to be contacted if the man got worse.

Despite the fact that the man fell ill at the beginning of December 2018, the doctor's visit was delayed until 2 January 2019. The man then had strained breathing and the doctor heard crackling sounds from the lungs but made the assessment that sampling could wait until the next day.

After the doctor's visit, the man deteriorated further and the next day he died at the nursing home.

No contact was made with relatives until after the man died.

IVO criticizes healthcare

In its decision, IVO concludes that the care provider Vimmerby municipality has not given the patient good care and that the municipality has breached the information about the patient's health condition to the relatives.

At the same time, IVO considers the doctor's handling and documentation of the patient to be deficient.

Takes action

Vimmerby municipality writes in its statement to IVO that a new way of working should be developed to prevent similar mistakes in documentation and contact with relatives.

Region Kalmar County writes that the doctor did not have time to read about the patient and that the time for preparatory conversations between doctor and nurse was insufficient. The region has therefore taken measures to improve the introduction of new doctors.
