Three people were shot, two of them to death, in connection with the protests against police violence in Kenosha on Wednesday night. Later in the day, police were able to arrest a young man at his home in Antioch, Illinois, about 30 miles from Kenosha, on suspicion of shooting to death.

Parts of the course of events were captured on film. The video shows how several people try to overpower a person with a semi-automatic rifle, which then opens fire. A large number of shots are heard simultaneously in the background.

- I just killed someone, the suspect is said to have said shortly afterwards, according to the news agency AP.

Armed militia

The circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting are still unclear, but according to the city's police chief, armed militias have patrolled the streets to protect property from destruction, according to them. Whether the 17-year-old belonged to them is still unknown.

After the shooting, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers announced that more than 250 National Guard soldiers would be deployed, bringing the force to about 500. At the same time, there is a curfew between 19 in the evening and 07 in the morning.

The President's response to the violence

On Wednesday, Donald Trump responded by deploying more than 200 federal police officers in the city to stop the violence.

"We will not accept looting, arson, violence and lawlessness on our American streets," the president wrote on Twitter.

The violent protests in the city flared up after Sunday's police intervention when 29-year-old African-American Jacob Blake was shot with several shots in the back. Mr Blake was seriously injured and, according to family and lawyers, was paralyzed.

According to investigators investigating the shooting, a knife was found on the driver's side of Blake's car, reports Reuters. It is still unknown if the knife was the reason why the police opened fire.
