August 26, 2020 "Mom, I'm fine. Don't worry. I wait for the magistrate to sign my release and then I take the plane and go back to Italy". These are the first words on the phone with his family after three days of silence by Calogero Nicolas Valenza, the 27-year-old from Gela stopped by the Egyptian police, just arrived at the Cairo airport, because he is being investigated as part of an investigation for international drug trafficking. .

A few days ago the mother of the young man arrested had asked the Italian institutions for help with these words: "I make a heartfelt appeal to the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, to intervene with the Egyptian government and make my son return home safe and sound. as short as possible ". Calogero Nicolas Valenza, on the evening of 23 August last, was stopped by the police on charges of drug trafficking in Cairo, where he had arrived, from Barcelona, a city in which he has been working as a PR in a company promoting shows for 4 years. , to visit a dear Egyptian friend of hers.

The family has always denied that the young man was found in possession of drugs. The mother, Rossana, 46, a housewife, defended her son with a drawn sword. "Nicolas is a good guy - he said - an honest worker, with a clean record". There is firmness in his words, but also fear of the evolution of the situation.

The first news from Egypt at the time of Nicolas's arrest were worrying: the crime for which the young man was arrested includes up to the death penalty and the costs to start a defensive warrant of trust reach almost 100 thousand euros. "Terrible" news for a family that lives only on the metalworker's salary of his father, Angelo Valenza, 50 years old.

The arrest of the young Sicilian, according to what was reconstructed by the family and their lawyer, would have come as part of an investigation into a group of boys of various nationalities investigated by the Egyptian police for drug trafficking. One of them would have mentioned the name of Nicolas, but it is not known with what kind of accusations. This alleged involvement would have resulted in the arrest of the young Sicilian, carried out as soon as he arrived at the Cairo airport.

From the Farnesina, to which the Valenza spouses contacted through the lawyer Nicoletta Cauchi, diplomatic channels were activated to protect the rights of Calogero Nicolas. After the contacts and checks initiated by the Italian embassy in Egypt, the Sicilian's position would be re-evaluated.
