More than 5,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in France in the past 24 hours, according to data provided on Wednesday by Public Health France.
In total, 5,429 new positive diagnoses were identified against 3,304 Tuesday, said the public body.
This is the highest number since testing has been carried out on a large scale. The threshold of 4,000 has been crossed several times in recent days.
Prime Minister Jean Castex on Wednesday called on the French "to be responsible" in the face of the resurgence of the epidemic, while sketching the outlines of the economic recovery plan which will be presented next week.
