• WIDE ANGLE. Start over: Europe resumes classes amid coronavirus outbreak

Countdown to back to school in the days of Covid-19 for 12.3 million primary and secondary school students in France. It will be, initially, 100% face-to-face and all students will return to classrooms next week. "Our school is going to resume, it must resume and will resume on September 1 for all students in France", announced Wednesday the Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer.

The big news: the use of the mask will be mandatory for all teachers and staff of the centers and also for all students from the age of 11. The latest health protocol, published in July, did not foresee forcing primary school teachers and toddlers to wear a mask.

France already has experience with going back to school during the pandemic. Unlike other countries that preferred to wait until September, France opened schools on May 12 , coinciding with the de-escalation after two months of confinement. This return to class was initially done on a voluntary basis and under a strict sanitary protocol with a maximum number of 15 students per class.

President Emmanuel Macron ordered the return of children to schools on a mandatory basis from June 22 until the end of the school year, which ended on July 4. The Ministry of Education considered it important for the students to return to the classroom, even if it was only two weeks, both from a pedagogical or psychological point of view.

The health protocol for this return to school in September has been lightened compared to May and June. This return to class will be marked by the end of the rule of compulsory physical distancing "in closed spaces" when "it is not materially possible or does not allow to accommodate all the students". In outdoor spaces, the rule will not apply.

The Ministry of Education assured that they will follow the evolution of the pandemic to see if it is necessary to adapt the reception protocol for students in places where the virus is most active . "If there must be hybrid measures (combining face-to-face classes and 'online' classes) or" confinement, we are prepared, "said Blanquer, who expects a return to school as normal as possible despite the coronavirus.
