After the coup d'état on August 19 in Bamako, the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) on Tuesday suspended Mali from its authorities. This decision was taken during an extraordinary session of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie (CPF), meeting by videoconference under the chairmanship of Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary General of La Francophonie, announced the OIF in a press release.

"The members of the CPF have decided to pronounce the suspension of the Republic of Mali from the Francophonie while maintaining the cooperation actions directly benefiting the civilian populations, as well as those contributing to the reestablishment of democracy", specified the organization.

"A return to constitutional order"

La Francophonie also "called for the release of President Keïta and other personalities arrested since August 18, as well as the establishment, as soon as possible, of a transitional government led by a civil authority, an essential condition a credible and lasting way out of the crisis ”.

Louise Mushikiwabo insisted on the need for a “return to constitutional order” in order to “effectively contribute to the restoration of peace and stability” in Mali. A “high-level delegation” from the OIF will soon be visiting Bamako “to assess the situation and its development on the ground”, also indicated the Secretary General.
