It is personnel at Denmark's military intelligence service, the Armed Forces Intelligence Service (FE), who are suspected of having kept crucial information secret and engaged in having illegally obtained information about Danish citizens. In addition, they must have neglected to follow up indications that espionage is ongoing within the area of the Ministry of Defense.

- It goes without saying that the intelligence service must work within the law's framework, says Mette Frederiksen (S) according to Danmarks Radio.

The head of FE, Lars Findsen, and two other senior executives have been suspended from their positions for the time being. His predecessor in the post, now chief of staff at the Ministry of Defense, has also been suspended.

Report from whistleblower

The background is a report from the supervisory body Tilsynet med Efterretningstjenesterne (TET) which states that FE has provided incorrect information to its reviewer since 2014. The report is based, among other things, on material from one or more whistleblowers that were submitted to TET in November last year.

So now Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen demands that all cards be put on the table:

- The Authority has submitted a large amount of written material to the government. The Minister of Defense has appointed an inquiry, but now we are launching an even deeper investigation.

At the same time, she emphasizes how important the intelligence service is for Denmark's security and that its work must continue while the investigation is ongoing.
