The Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced on Monday the discovery of 425 gold coins dating from the time of the Abbasid Caliphate. The treasure is therefore about 1,100 years old, reports  Times of Israel .

The exact location of the find has not been specified. The booty, consisting of 845 grams of pure gold, was found by two young people who were volunteering to participate in archaeological digs before their compulsory military service began.

Possible teachings on the Abbasid period

When this currency was used, coins represented a large sum of money. "With such an amount, a person could buy a luxurious house in one of the most beautiful districts of Fostat, the great and rich capital of Egypt at that time", explains Robert Kool, specialist in ancient coins at the IAA. The loot also contains fragments of gold used as small change.

This is the first time that elements of this type have been found in Israel. Experts hope to be able to learn from this “rare treasure” about the Abbasid period. "The solid gold coins […] were found in perfect condition, as if they had been buried the day before," says a press release from the IAA. “Their discovery could indicate that international trade existed between residents of the region and more isolated areas.
