At the state road and transport research institute, simulators have been made for several years for the train industry, small fake ones with computer screens inside, where future train drivers can practice driving in various difficult situations, or for example practice new signal systems. Now they are making an investment in the rescue service as well. With a blue light simulator, future ambulance drivers can train with exercises that could not be created in reality.

- We take help from the industry to find out which situations they think it is important to train in, says research leader Birgitta Thorslund.

A game that should feel real

The ambulance service in Stockholm has bought a copy of the blue light simulator, the other is in Linköping. A machine costs about half a million kronor. The computer program is constantly being developed to be as realistic as possible and after driving you can look at it and discuss the decisions the driver made. In the future, they are also considering building in a function where the call is scored.

We let an ambulance driver test the machine, see in the clip above how it went.
