Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry, released prematurely in the victory against Brooklyn on Sunday (150-122) in the first round of the NBA play-offs, suffers from a sprained ankle, his club announced on Monday.

"Kyle Lowry underwent an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) after his injury occurred in the first quarter. He has a sprained left ankle," said the Raptors without specifying the duration of his possible unavailability.

Defending champion Toronto is due to start its Eastern Conference semi-finals Thursday against Boston. The two teams eliminated the Nets and Philadelphia respectively.

The 34-year-old Lowry, six times selected for the All-Star Game, is one of the indisputable holders of the Raptors. Since the start of the play-offs, he has compiled 12.5 points, 7 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

Nick Nurse made no secret of his concern Sunday night that Lowry might miss one or more games against Boston. "He is the most experienced and toughest player on the team," he said.
