Xinhua News Agency, United Nations, August 24 (Reporter Shang Xuqian) Duan Jielong, a candidate nominated by the Chinese government and Chinese ambassador to Hungary, was elected as a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on the 24th.

  The 30th Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was held at the United Nations headquarters on the 24th to elect 7 judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to replace the 7 judges whose term of office will end on September 30 this year. In the first round of voting, Duan Jielong was elected with 149 votes. The other judges elected were: David Attard (Malta), Ida Caracciolo (Italy), Maria Teresa Infante Card. Philippines (Chile), Maurice Kenneth Kamga (Cameroon), Marchyan Kulik (Ukraine).

  A total of 6 judges were elected on the 24th. The second round of voting will be held on the 25th, and the remaining judge will be selected from Jamaican Cathy-Ann Brown and Brazilian Rodrigo Fernandez Morey.

  The newly-elected judges have a nine-year term and will perform their duties on October 1 this year.

  Founded in 1996, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is an important judicial institution established in accordance with the "United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" to resolve disputes concerning the interpretation and application of the "Convention". The Tribunal is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, and consists of 21 independent judges. Since the establishment of the court, the Chinese who have served in the court successively include Zhao Lihai, Xu Guangjian and Gao Zhiguo.
