99, a Brazilian-based VTC company, relies on artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure the safety of its customers. The company wants to put an end to harassment and sexual assault within its fleet of drivers.

In Brazil, the problem is serious. According to a study conducted by two institutes, 97% of female passengers using taxis or VTCs (such as Uber) have already experienced inappropriate sexual behavior during a journey, reports  Forbes .

The developers of 99 have therefore designed tools to identify the attackers, but also to better follow the victims. The AI is based on the analysis of comments left by customers and drivers. An algorithm identifies specific keywords that denounce inappropriate behavior. The tool also detects unusually long downtimes or suspicious detours.

The first figures are encouraging: thanks to this system, cases of sexual harassment and sexual assault would have fallen by 23% in the first quarter of 2020. 99 also attaches importance to the follow-up of victims by offering an exchange service with the clientele, in order to establish more empathetic communication with victims of assault.
