In May 1979, Rocío Jurado had no problem letting María José Cantudo close the occasional show that they both shared as a result of a festival that was held at the Apolo Theater in Barcelona . La Cantudo was during that season representing Las Leandras , on the same stage, and the Jury, who had also been told that she would be the one who would start the final applause, did not care that María José put the finishing touch. What in another time could have been a real train crash , was solved with camaraderie and in a natural way, although eight years later the singer's concessions had a limit.

Pilar Miró was preparing the special 1987 New Year's Eve gala , which she was going to direct personally, with the addition that she was already the director of Televisión Española at that time. She was very clear that the presenters should be Carmen Maura and Arturo Fernández, in a kind of dialectical and representative game of the left and the right. The musical performances would be as always for all tastes, from groups of the moment such as Radio Futura or Hombres G, to classics of the stature of José Luis Perales or the Dynamic Duo. And of course, it was planned to have what was already called the best voice in Spain, Rocío Jurado.

Nor could international artists like Donna Summer, a very young Eros Ramazzotti or Brigitte Nielsen be absent, who was in full swing after divorcing actor Sylvester Stallone. The woman from Chipiona had just arrived from the United States, where she had sung for Vice President George Bush at a private dinner that same Christmas. Two years earlier she had done the same, delighting Republican Ronald Reagan with her voice, in the middle of the White House.

The night of December 31 arrived and the presence of the Jury, which was announced, never arrived . It is true that the great expectation was taken by the Italian Sabrina, whose supposed pectoral carelessness made that same night go from being a stranger to the Spanish to become a social phenomenon. But even so, Rocío did not hesitate to explain her absence.

It all started when the artist's manager , who was not yet her brother Amador, wanted to find out how the singer's performance would be located , in what order and at what time. The answer came to be more or less than where it fits and where it touches , without any distinction. Rocío appealed that her attitude was not to go diva through life, but it seemed unfair to her that they treated her in that way, placing her as a filler and practically just landed from America. Hurt, she refused to participate.

The production department decided to contact the Jury personally , with the intention of convincing her. They claimed that she could not miss a night like that, that she was allowed to sing three songs instead of two, although they still could not guarantee the place of her intervention. It was of no use. Days later, Rocío declared: "They paid me a million pesetas, believing that they were giving me this world and a part of the other. That they continue to bring all the foreigners they want, and that they treat them as well as they want, but to the Spaniards who offer us decent things. "

In addition to her demonstrated displeasure with the management, she added that she was willing to never go to Spanish Television again if the working conditions did not change . A fight that Lola Flores had already undertaken without success, when five years ago she reproached the chain for bringing foreign artists in better conditions. The difference is that this time "the greatest" had given an ultimatum.

Meanwhile, the press played to rival the singer with the emerging Sabrina, for a simple matter of cleavage, and she assured that she took it as a joke and was delighted that they finally chose another bust to look at. At the time when the comparisons did not cease, the interpreter of Como una ola settled the issue without hesitation, assuring that "tuna has nothing to do with bitumen and both come in a can."

Weeks later, with the year still just beginning, the usual reception took place at the Royal Palace in which the Monarchs (Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía) shake hands with those of the artists. An event characterized by its heterogeneity, in which Loquillo met Laura Valenzuela, Norma Duval with Chumy Chúmez, or Nuria Espert with Marta Sánchez. And there Rocío Jurado and Pilar Miró met.

Nothing transpired from that occasion, but the truth is that a month later, and after almost a year without appearing on the small screen, the Jury displayed its talent on the Saturday Night program, and with all the honors. Pilar Miró had called him to offer it to him personally.

Even so, it was not until 1991 when Rocío was once again part of a New Year's Eve gala. On that occasion within a special starring Lina Morgan, but where the singer had her prominent place, even participating in one of the skits alongside the popular comedian. The direction of the chain had changed, but perhaps the public still remembered the words of the Jury when it was outraged with Pilar Miró: "I am very simple, but on stage I do not go under a step or to take gold coins."
