  • Covid-19: Outbreaks in Madrid by municipalities

In the last 14 days Alcobendas, one of the municipalities with the highest per capita income in the entire region, added 496 positive cases of coronavirus. Thus, the incidence of Covid-19 in that period is 362.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the latest epidemiological report prepared by the regional government, which makes it the municipality with the most coronavirus in Madrid. What has happened? Why does this municipality in the north of Madrid break the paradigm that the virus is more prevalent in the most humble areas and where there is greater inequality?

“We really don't know what happened. Because now you see everyone wearing their mask on the street, " says María Vela, a neighbor from the Centro district of Alcobendas whom we found sitting on a bench in the park in Catalonia with her husband Valentín. They are both over 60 years old and take advantage of the early hours of the day to take a short walk. Then they return to their home, from where they will not leave again until the next day. They are afraid of the virus that is still on the streets. “People are now much more responsible than before and around here almost everyone complies with the measures. Not only because of the fines, but because they are already aware of what is happening, "reasons Valentín.

Despite the fact that in the summer the streets of the municipalities of Madrid give a respite from the neighbors who walk along its sidewalks daily, in this northern municipality of the Community its main roads register a constant movement. It is Thursday morning and the center slowly fills with people. They are mostly older adults like María and Valentín.

Mariluz cleans the mirrors in the hall of a building at the intersection of Orense and Pablo Picasso streets while she watches people go by. "I think that the problem we have now is the asymptomatic who go home and infect others," she says. She assures that of all the people she sees on the street, she uses the mask and complies with safety measures. But when we get home, or are with friends, we don't worry. And since the Government does not test all of us, many of us can have the virus, not know it and infect others, "he complains.

According to the mayor, Ángel Sánchez Sanguino, from the PSOE, the City Council has detected two factors that have caused positive cases of coronavirus to increase in the town. Alcobendas is the municipality of the Community of Madrid, after the capital, that has the most workers registered, which causes great mobility. Then, there is a factor that is also playing against and that is that we have areas with a high population density and that is where more cases are being registered, "he explains.

It is precisely the Centro district, where there are old and cheaper houses than in the rest of the town, where up to six people live in a single floor, and which is opposed to the reality of another area of this municipality, La Moraleja, considered as one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Madrid.

In fact, according to the data published by the Consistory, in the last 14 days in the center there were 214 positives, compared to 38 detected in this other area.

Another element that contributes to this number continuing to rise is that "some groups of young people, not all, are seeing a certain relaxation in prevention measures," explains the mayor.

Given this, since this week the Consistory has adopted measures such as advancing the closing time of four parks to 10 pm and intensifying the monitoring of the Local Police to comply with safety regulations. Emphasis will be placed on avoiding, for example, meetings of more than ten people or the bottle. "Together with Civil Protection, there will also be a task of raising awareness and information for young people," says the mayor, adding that the City Council has provided all the collaboration to the Community of Madrid, "which is competent in the topic".
