Corona surprises doctors with its effect on a third sense

The emerging corona virus continues to surprise scientists with its different symptoms from one infected to another, while some infected people do not show symptoms of the virus at all.

And doctors detected a new sign indicating infection with corona, as it was found that the virus could affect the sense of hearing as well, according to a report from the "Genesis Boy Report" website.

And experts had announced in previous studies that one of the symptoms of infection with the virus was the loss of the sense of smell and taste.

And unlike the loss of the senses of smell and taste, the loss of hearing appears after recovering from the virus infection.

British researchers published a study in the International Journal of Audiology last month, indicating that some patients may suffer from hearing loss or from ringing in the ears after recovering from the virus.

Scientists studied 121 adults who had symptoms of severe corona virus, with 13% of them reporting poor hearing eight weeks after being discharged from hospital.

The report said that it cannot be said that the virus affected the sense of hearing, and the drugs that are being taken for Corona may be behind the problem.

"We already know that viruses such as measles, mumps and meningitis can cause hearing loss, and coronaviruses can damage the nerves that carry information to and from the brain," the report quoted Kevin Monroe, a professor at the University of Manchester.

He added, "It is possible, in theory, that corona causes problems in parts of the auditory system."

It is reported that a team of scientists discovered in a previous study traces of the Corona virus in the ears of patients who had died with it. The team conducted a study, published in the Journal of Head and Neck Surgery, on three corona deaths, and found high levels of the virus in the ears of two of them, and also in the back of the temporal bone behind the ear.

At least 22,734,900 people in 196 countries and territories have been officially recorded infected with the virus since the outbreak began, of which at least 14,298,000 have recovered to date.

These numbers only reflect a part of the actual number of injuries, as several countries do not conduct tests except for the most serious cases, while other countries give priority to conducting tests to track contacts of the injured, in addition to the limited testing capabilities of a number of poor countries.

The new Corona virus has killed at least 800,000 people in the world since it appeared in China at the end of December.
