On Wednesday, what happened caused the cup to overflow for Masthugg's parish. A person who usually spends time in the church asked parish pastor Marika Palmdahl if she had seen the person's missing drugs, which Göteborg Direkt was the first to report.

- We have tried to persevere, because these people need a safe place to be. But then we felt that this did not work, as even children move in the church during the day, says Marika Palmdahl.

Masthuggskyrkan is centrally located in Gothenburg and has long been a place where socially disadvantaged people, who live in homelessness or have substance abuse problems, seek refuge. Several of them sleep outside the church and enter when it opens.

Met by locked doors

It is usually noisy outside the church during the evenings and nights, but normally it is quiet during the day. The church has therefore had open doors, even though it was unmanned.

But now the unrest has entered the church premises and on Thursday the visitors were met by locked doors - something which according to Marika Palmdahl was received with mixed feelings.

- Some have been frustrated that they do not come in, while others think it is a good decision as they believe that the room should be a safe place for them, she says.

"Becomes a cost issue"

How long the church will be closed is currently unclear.

- Of course we want to help these people, but right now we do not have the resources to deal with the problems that arise. The church is unmanned and that makes it uneasy. Because there has also been destruction, it will also be a cost issue for us, says Marika Palmdahl.
