  • Alicante: An outbreak forces the closure of a Cox brothel and tests on workers and clients

Castilla-La Mancha and Catalonia have ordered the immediate closure of all brothels to face the outbreaks of coronavirus, as requested by the Equality Minister, Irene Montero, this Friday.

As explained in a press conference by the Minister of Health of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, Jesús Fernández Sanz , the order comes through the implementation of a decree with new measures to fight the virus. In addition to the closure of hostess clubs, the rule also regulates the suspension of all popular festivals in the region, the prohibition of eating or drinking on public transport or the limitation of capacity at wakes.

The Castilian-Manchego case is special, since, according to data managed by the Institute for Women, autonomy brings together up to 80% of the country's brothels. Close to a thousand premises and flats in which prostitution is practiced are therefore closed as of Sunday, when the decree approved by the Government of Emiliano García-Page enters into compliance.

Catalonia joins

On the other hand, the Minister of Health of the Generalitat, Alba Vergès , has announced that in the resolution published this Thursday in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat de Catalunya (DOGC) that extended without date the closure of discos, karaoke bars, music bars, Ballrooms and party halls also included "public establishments with attached booths," a term for brothels.

"It was an incoherence to close nightlife and keep other venues open where activities of this type are carried out," said the minister, who added that the municipalities have been instructed to control that these orders are followed.

The secretary of Feminist Policies of the PSC, Sònia Guerra , had asked the Government a few hours before the closure of the hostess premises, as a result of the decision taken by Castilla-La Mancha.

The decision to close this type of premises has been gaining strength for weeks, due to various cases, some of them on La Mancha soil, in which outbreaks have occurred within facilities destined for prostitution. In these situations, it has been difficult to locate customers to carry out PCR tests or contact tracing, as Irene Montero pointed out this Friday in statements to RNE .

Montero vindicates the rights of women

In addition, in a letter sent to all the autonomies, Montero calls for the closure of hostess clubs throughout Spain, considering that "the health and rights of women are fundamental." She took the opportunity to recall that the Government "is not going to give up on sexual exploitation" carried out in this type of premises.

"The pimp industry always remains in impunity and in absolute opacity. There is a lot of talk about the rights of women in the context of prostitution but not about business figures," the minister stressed.
