The Civil Guard has recovered 15 bodies from the cayuco found on Wednesday 80 miles south of Gran Canaria , the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands has reported .

The cayuco had been towed by the Río Tajo patrol boat of the Civil Guard to the port of Arinaga , in Gran Canaria, where this night the corpses were disembarked, which at first thought could be between eight and 10.

Members of the Civil Guard and the Gran Canaria Firefighters Consortium have participated in this operation and the first corpse has been disembarked around nine at night.

The cayuco was spotted on Wednesday around 8:55 am 80 miles south of Gran Canaria by a Maritime Rescue plane that was making a search flight for another vessel. From the beginning, the presence of inert bodies was found inside and later it was confirmed that there were between eight and 10 bodies on board.

The Civil Guard patrol boat has been in charge of towing this boat from the area to the port of Gran Canaria on a complicated journey in which it has taken more than 24 hours.

Five more dead in another cayuco

The Government Delegation in the Canary Islands has reported that among the occupants of another boat rescued by Salvamento Marítimo 110 miles south of Gran Canaria there were five deaths and 11 survivors.

The Maritime Rescue vessel Salvamar Menkalinan has transferred to the port of Arguineguín (in the south of Gran Canarias) all the occupants of the cayuco that was sighted this Thursday by a SAR plane .

A Civil Guard helicopter had evacuated two of the boat's occupants to a health center, but one of them died.
