• Urbanism.La Puerta del Sol says goodbye to cars forever

In a "historic day" for the capital, as defined by the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, the pedestrianization of Puerta del Sol and its surroundings was inaugurated today, where an additional 5,546 square meters will be used only by citizens .

According to the mayor, the pedestrianization was scheduled for next year, but after the pandemic, the City Council, governed by PP and Ciudadanos, wanted this project to be a kind of "resilience." For Almeida, this pedestrianization shows that the City Council works for "sustainability, one of the pillars of a better future and better quality of life for the people of Madrid".

In that sense, he advanced that the City Council will work to make pedestrianizations in all the districts before the end of the year. "For us all of Madrid is central, we have to carry out a series of actions that reach the 21 districts with a comprehensive approach, which seeks to ensure that Madrid is always up to date with the challenges of the future and that goes through sustainability," he said in the inauguration that was also attended by the vice president of the Community, Ignacio Aguado.

This project is one of the most important measures of the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy, the plan with which the Madrid City Council intends to comply with the European directive on air quality and supply Madrid Central, the project of the Manuela Executive Carmena, which was recently overthrown by the courts, but which will remain in force until the Supreme Court resolves the appeals.

With the step taken today, Calle Mayor becomes pedestrianized as it passes through Puerta el Sol; Alcalá street between Sevilla and Sol; Carrera de San Jerónimo between Plaza de Canalejas and Kilometer Zero; Espoz and Mina between Calle de la Cruz and Carrera de San Jerónimo; and Calle de la Victoria between Calle de la Cruz and Carrera de San Jerónimo. Esparteros street, meanwhile, will undergo a change of direction.

In this way, up to almost 7,000 daily commutes that took place in the surroundings of this enclave of the city, the majority of taxis, will be reduced to zero.
