US President Donald Trump said that he had ordered Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to notify the Security Council that his country would re-impose full UN sanctions on Iran, and he also announced his expectation that Saudi Arabia would follow the example of the UAE in signing an agreement for normalization with Israel.

Trump announced during a press conference at the White House that he had ordered Pompeo to inform the UN Security Council that the United States was requesting the activation of the "Snapback" mechanism, in order to re-impose all UN sanctions on Iran for allegedly violating its nuclear obligations.

He added that he worked on his country's withdrawal two years ago from the "disastrous" nuclear deal with Iran, adding that if he wins the elections, "then during the first month of his term, Iran will come to them asking for a very quick agreement."

The "Snack" mechanism stipulated in the nuclear agreement concluded with Iran in 2015 allows for the re-imposition of all UN sanctions on Iran if a state party to the agreement requests this, on the grounds that Tehran violates the obligations stipulated in the agreement.

Saudi Arabia and normalization

Regarding the normalization of relations between some Arab countries with Israel, Trump said he expected Saudi Arabia to follow the example of the UAE in signing an agreement to normalize relations with Israel.

In response to a question at a White House press conference whether he expected the kingdom to join the agreement, Trump replied, "Yes, I expect that."

Trump revealed that the UAE had asked his country to buy F-35s, and he said that it had money to buy this type of aircraft, unlike other countries, as he put it.

On the other hand, Trump considered the American presence in Iraq and the entire Middle East region to be the biggest mistake in the history of his country, which he said had spent 19 years there as a police force, and that the time had come for the countries of the region to defend themselves.
