The Permanent Commission of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has requested this Wednesday "respect" for the independence of the magistrates after a few days of continuous attacks by various members of Podemos.

This commission has agreed to publicly emphasize that the independence of the legal power "is a key element of the rule of law and of democracy itself," which is why "respect" is required for the work of judges.

"The confidence of citizens in the independence of judges and magistrates is the best guarantee for the defense of fundamental rights and public freedoms of all," continues the statement signed this Wednesday.

The manifesto comes after several days in which senior officials of Podemos questioned judicial impartiality in matters such as the investigation of the alleged B-box of the party or the treatment of Juan Carlos I.

The 'attacks' of Podemos

The secretary of Civil Society of Podemos and co-spokesperson of the Executive, Rafael Mayoral, considered in a statement on Cadena Ser last week that the judge in charge of the case for the alleged irregular financing of the purple party , Juan José Escalonilla , was doing " strange things". In the same way, the also deputy considered "a political use" for the party leadership to be called to declare in November in order to have a greater media impact.

Along the same lines, the spokesman for Podemos in Congress, Pablo Echenique, charged against judicial independence when the call to testify from the upper echelons of his formation was made public: "The judge calls even the prompter to testify and asks until the documentation of the vaccination of the dog of Pablo Iglesias' third cousin without any proof other than the statement of one who 'heard' and 'suspects' things, "he reproached.

For Echenique, in addition, the outbreak of the case of the alleged box B of Podemos is a way of camouflaging the "flight" of Juan Carlos I, as he expressed on Twitter.

The CGPJ's request comes just one day after the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, defended the presumption of innocence of the King Emeritus and disavowed the criticisms of Podemos, considering that they were "guilty trials" and that "they forget" that the Presumption of innocence is a "basic pillar of the rule of law". She also recalled that "wherever" Juan Carlos I is, "she is at the disposal of the courts, how could it be otherwise".

Robles's statements join those expressed by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, last week after meeting with King Felipe VI, in which he demanded "maximum respect" for the judges investigating the alleged irregular financing of Podemos.
