“The Secretary General is following the unfolding events in Mali with deep concern, including the military insurgency that culminated in the arrest of the President ... and members of his government earlier today in Bamako,” the statement said.
As noted, Guterres "strongly condemns these actions and calls for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and the rule of law in Mali."
"To this end, he demands the immediate and unconditional release of the president ... and members of his cabinet," stresses Dujarrick.
Earlier it was reported that the President and Prime Minister of Mali were arrested by the rebel military.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that they are closely following the events in Mali, noting that observers assess what is happening as a military mutiny.
The EU said that they condemn the attempted coup in Mali.
