According to the County Administrative Board of Gävleborg's latest inventory from 2019, there are approximately 3,600 cormorant nests along the coast. Mainly in Söderhamn, Hudiksvall and Gävle. When the county administrative board began the work of inventorying cormorant nests in 2012, there were 2,000 nests.

- It has increased in recent years, says Elina Eriksson, game manager at the county administrative board.

From 1 April until 1 November, 1,300 cormorants may be shot in the Söderhamn archipelago.

The bird settles on islands in the archipelago and the vegetation dies from cormorant droppings. In addition to destroying parts of the archipelago, they also cause great strain on fish stocks.

- We want to see a better balance than it is now with both fish abundance and human acceptance of the species, she says.
