Tensions with the Prime Minister therefore forced the Canadian Minister of Finance to resign. Bill Morneau announced Monday his departure from the government because of his opposition with Justin Trudeau on spending against the coronavirus pandemic. He also left his post as an MP. His goal now is to run for the post of Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

A deficit expected to exceed 340 billion dollars

Minister of Finance since 2015, Bill Morneau did not see the way Justin Trudeau saw how to revive the economy at all. Weakened by the coronavirus, Canada's expected deficit reaches more than 340 billion dollars (216 billion euros). The minister did not want to add to the expense for fear of jeopardizing public finances.

But that might not be the only reason for his departure. Bill Morneau has at the moment every interest in exposing himself less politically and mediatically. The minister is in fact targeted by an investigation by the Canadian Ethics Commissioner into his links with a charity that employed his daughter, and to which the government had awarded a major contract without a call for tenders.

This investigation also targets Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, several of whose family members have also been paid by this association. Bill Morneau also revealed last month that he had reimbursed more than $ 41,000 in travel expenses covered by the We Charity association, shortly before being heard on the matter by a House of Commons committee.
