Thirteen cars set on fire, eleven degraded with kicks or baseball bats, police and firefighters received with mortar fire: two sensitive areas of Reims (Marne) were shaken by violence on Sunday night in Monday, we learned from the prosecution.

“The first event took place in the Croix-Rouge district from 8:30 pm. Police and firefighters intervened for damage to cars, ”said Deputy Prosecutor Marlène Borde. "We found thirteen cars set on fire and eleven damaged with kicks or baseball bats, especially on the windshields and mirrors," she continued.

It makes you think of "an ambush"

"At the time of their intervention, the police and firefighters came under mortar fire, fortunately without causing any injuries." The scenario of what "seems to resemble an ambush", according to the deputy prosecutor, was repeated around midnight in the Wilson district. “Firefighters and police are called in for a garbage can fire. On their arrival, they received six mortar shots which damaged one of the police cars ”.

“The first complaints are filed. The investigation begins, in particular to identify the suspects who were hooded at the time of the facts ”indicated Marlène Borde, specifying not to know for the moment the cause of this sudden surge of violence.

A response to interpellations?

For Xavier Albertini, deputy in charge of the security of the mayor (LR) Arnaud Robinet, it “could have a link with difficult arrests which were made 48 hours before these incidents which strongly resemble an ambush to take revenge on the forces of police ".

“The State and the DDSP (Departmental Directorate of Public Security) have requested the reinforcement of mobile forces to secure these two neighborhoods. They are currently being mobilized and should intervene very soon, ”said Xavier Albertini, after a meeting at the town hall of Reims.
