The Japanese Kei Nishikori, former finalist of the US Open, announced Sunday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and that he therefore forfeited the Masters 1000 from Cincinnati, exceptionally relocated this year to New York from 22 to 28 August.

"I have bad news to tell you. This (Sunday) morning in Florida, I was screened for Covid-19 and its result is positive," said the 31st worldwide on his website.

"I have to forfeit the Cincinnati tournament," he continued.

“My team and I will do another screening test on Friday and I will give some new info then. I feel fine and have very few symptoms, but for everyone's safety I went to the hospital. 'isolation,' said Nishikori, who lives and trains in Florida.

Nishikori, 30, is therefore uncertain for the US Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year which will take place from August 31 to September 13 behind closed doors.

He played, and lost to Croatian Marin Cilic, the final of the US Open in 2014 and reached 4th place in the world rankings in 2015. Since then, his career has been hampered by repeated injuries.
