While Iran is jubilant, Donald Trump has it bad. The Islamic republic claimed victory on Saturday after the UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a US resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran.

Trump shuns Putin's summit

The first boomerang effect of this decision was not long in coming: the American president said on Saturday that he would “probably not” participate in the summit of the five permanent members of the Security Council with Iran proposed by Vladimir Poutin. "I think we will wait until after the election," said Donald Trump, when asked about his possible arrival.

It must be said that this is a real humiliation for Washington. Only two of the fifteen Council members voted for the resolution on Friday, highlighting the divisions between the United States and its European allies. Tehran therefore took the opportunity to mock Washington for its inability to obtain more than one voice of support, that of the Dominican Republic. Washington's European allies have all abstained.

The int'l community, once again & w / a clear voice, rejected the US reckless & futile attempt to undermine the #UNSC credibility. The #American_regime should take a listen from its total failures & stop shaming itself at UN, otherwise it will get isolated, even more than now. pic.twitter.com/mGjJfy8O9o

For Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the United States has failed to end what he called the 2015 “half-alive” agreement with the great powers that allowed Iran to escape to sanctions in exchange for a reduction in its nuclear program. According to him, "this day will go down in the history of our country and in the history of the struggle against global arrogance." “During the 75-year history of the United Nations, America has never been so isolated,” added Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Moussavi.

The @UN Security Council failed today to hold Iran accountable. It enabled the world's top state sponsor of terrorism to buy and sell deadly weapons and ignored the demands of countries in the Middle East. America will continue to work to correct this mistake.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his part denounced a "serious error": "I regret that the whole world has not joined in the fight against the largest state sponsor of terrorism to ensure that it does not can not have weapons systems presenting a risk, a risk for the heart of Europe ”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also found the decision not to renew the embargo "scandalous".

Washington's unilateral diplomacy

This decision should pave the way for a long showdown with repercussions for the international agreement reached to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The arms embargo expires on October 18. However, although Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States from the agreement, American diplomacy now threatens to invoke its status as a country "participating" in this same text to unilaterally impose the reinstatement of UN sanctions. Such a maneuver would risk pushing Iran to definitively slam the door of the nuclear deal, from which it has already begun to withdraw. Above all, the unilateral diplomacy of the United States on this issue risks plunging the United Nations into one of the worst crises in its history.
