A man in Australia jumped off a skateboard to pounce on a shark attacking his wife, and he punched the fish several times until the wife escaped.

The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported that Chantal Doyle, 35, was attacked by a large white shark, two to 3 meters long, while she was surfing on the beach, seriously wounding her right leg.

"Doyle's husband has jumped off his shark skateboard," the newspaper quoted Stephen Pearce, executive director of Surf Life Saving, the state's network of beach lifeguards, as saying.

"This man paddled quickly, jumped off his board on the shark, hit him to force him to leave it and then helped her to return to the beach," he added. "It is a truly heroic act."

Passers-by and medics provided first aid to Doyle on the beach, then she was transferred to a hospital and her condition is currently stable, according to the same source.
