The Sicilian volcano Etna, which overlooks the city of Catania and its airport, manifested this Friday a resurgence of activity resulting in "modest emissions" of ash clouds, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) Italian.
The black plume generated by this activity is "dispersed by the wind in the south / south-east direction with slight fallout of ash in the region of Pedara, Trecastagni and Viagrande", the INGV said in a press release. "Observation of the parameters relating to the deformation of the soil does not allow us to identify any particular variations". The renewed activity of the famous volcano has so far had no impact on the activity of Catania international airport.
Etna, with an area of 1,250 km2, is the highest active volcano (3,324 meters) in Europe, with frequent eruptions for around 500,000 years. Its last eruptive phase dates back to spring 2017 and the last big eruption in winter 2008/2009.
