The Italian champion Davide Formolo won the third stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné, Friday, in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville (Savoie), with about thirty seconds ahead of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, still leader of the test.

Formolo successfully concluded a long breakaway. Behind him, Roglic settled in an uphill sprint the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot and the German Emanuel Buchmann, already his following the day before at the finish at the Col de Porte.

Colombian Egan Bernal, winner of the Tour de France, sagged in the last few hundred meters.

Formolo, who left in the breakaway launched at the 40th kilometer, left his companions, the French Pierre Latour last, in the Col de la Madeleine.

The Italian, alone at the front in the last 66 kilometers, tackled the final climb (14.8 km at 6%) with less than four minutes in advance and resisted until the end.

Aged 27, Formolo was second in the Strade Bianche at the start of the month, the same rank as in Liège-Bastogne-Liège last year.

On Saturday, the 4th stage presents seven ascents in 157 kilometers, between Ugine (Savoie) and Megève (Haute-Savoie). With the climb of Bisanne, classified out of category, 34 kilometers from the finish judged on the heights of Megève.
