13 August 2020 One hundred thousand companies with at least three employees active on digital platforms are nearly 100,000: 99,814. 9.7% of the total, according to Istat data from the census of companies, relative to 2018. The share rises to 80% in tourist accommodation services   

The overall turnover achieved online exceeds 44 billion euros for companies with at least ten employees (corresponding to 2.4% of total turnover). Also in this case, in hospitality, the share is much higher and reaches 24% of the total turnover achieved by the online and offline sector. An even higher level of online turnover characterizes air transport, where it reaches 26% of the total, and practically all companies that offer transport services to people use the platforms. 

The activity on digital platforms, according to 17.3% of companies with 10 or more employees operating there, allows for an increase in total turnover by over 10%. Furthermore, 41.1% believe that, even just the presence on the platforms, leads to a strengthening of the competitive position. Platforms become a matter of life or death for many small and medium-sized enterprises: 33.5% of those with 10-19 employees indicate that they use them to guarantee a volume of sales that allows them to remain on the market.
