- If the bite is superficial, it is usually enough to wash clean with soap and water. If you have not taken all tetanus syringes according to the vaccination program, you should do so, says Magnus Johansson.

Deep bite can cause problems

Should the bite be deeper, however, it can be problematic, especially if it is close to joints. Rats, like dogs and cats, have bacteria in their mouths that increase the risk of infection.

- You must be aware of whether it becomes red, swollen, hurts or if you get a fever. Then you should seek care, because you may need antibiotics, Magnus Johansson explains.

Is there a risk of rabies?

- No, it has been eradicated in Sweden for more than 100 years. We have had two cases of rabies in Sweden in the last 50 years, but those patients had been bitten abroad, Magnus Johansson answers.

Unusual with rat bites

Rat bites are not uncommon among people who have them as pets. But statistically, it is more common for people to seek care after being bitten by dogs and cats.

SVT Nyheter Sörmland informs Magnus Johansson about Jennifer Mikkelsen who on Tuesday was attacked by a rat in Nyköping.

- I have treated someone with camel bites but never heard of anyone being bitten by a rat out in the wild. So it's unusual I would say, he replies.
