On August 12, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian stated at a regular press conference that the election of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is a local election in China.

Zhao Lijian stated that the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress made a decision on the continuation of the duties of the sixth legislative council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in accordance with the Constitution and the Hong Kong Basic Law, which provides a solid legal foundation for the sixth legislative council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to continue to perform its duties and is conducive to maintaining Hong Kong. The constitutional order and the rule of law in the SAR are conducive to ensuring the normal governance of the Hong Kong SAR government and the normal operation of society. The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council and the Liaison Office of the Central Committee of the Hong Kong Government have respectively issued statements to firmly support it.

"I want to emphasize here that Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China, and the election of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is a local election in China. Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, and no foreign governments, organizations or individuals are allowed to interfere." Zhao Lijian said. (Reporter Zhang Weiran edited Lu Jie)
