"We will discuss urgent issues and address the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, the presidential election in Belarus and also developments in Lebanon," he tweeted.

Sweden's Foreign Minister Ann Linde will participate in the meeting via video, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs states.

The EU may impose targeted sanctions on people in Belarus after the controversial election on Sunday, Linde states.

"Not fair"

This applies to those who are responsible for the violence against the demonstrators, for the election fraud and who have been involved in the election process and the election not being free and fair, she tells Swedish Radio.

Josep Borrell stated on Tuesday that Belarus's presidential election was neither "free nor fair" and warned that the union could take "action against those responsible for the violence we have seen, the unjust arrests and the electoral fraud".

The EU previously had sanctions against a number of people linked to Lukashenko's regime, but lifted many of them in 2016 in connection with Belarus' release of political prisoners.
