It was in 2019 that a total of four bone parts of the dinosaur were found, from the neck, back and tail, on three different occasions, including by a fossil hunter and his family.

The Isle of Wight is known for being one of Europe's most dinosaur-dense places.

- It was absolutely fantastic. I thought the bones seemed special and took them to the Dinosaur Isle Museum, who immediately felt that this was something rare, says the fossil hunter in a press release on the University of Southampton's website.

One of the other bone parts was found by chance by another fossil hunter.

- I walked on the beach, kicked rocks and found what looked like a dinosaur leg, he says.

Related to T-Rex

The researchers have now come to the conclusion that all the findings probably come from the same individual, who was given the name Vectaerovenator inopinatus - a completely new species.

The studies indicate that it was four meters long, lived in the area around the Isle of Wight during its lifetime and related to modern birds and the large predator dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex.

Now the dinosaur museum on the island invites everyone who thinks they have found a dinosaur fossil to contact them, as there may be more remains of the new species on the island.
