According to Trump, the United States has not formally invited leaders of other countries. "We have not yet issued an invitation. We are in dialogue with them." Trump also pointed out that there are plans to invite leaders of non-G7 countries.

Trump said that of course he would invite Putin to the meeting, "I think he is an important factor."

The 2020 G7 summit was originally scheduled to be held in June at Camp David, the US presidential resort. For various reasons, the summit was postponed to September. Trump earlier announced plans to invite Russia, Australia, India and South Korea to participate in the meeting.

The G7 was established in the 1970s and its members include the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. After Russia joined in 1997, it became the Group of Eight (G8). In 2014, when the Ukrainian crisis broke out, seven countries refused to participate in the G8 summit originally scheduled to be held in Russia, and instead held the G7 summit.
